I was invited yesterday by Director Jose Maria Condemi to come over to Berkeley for a once in a lifetime experience. He invited me to photograph the world premiere of The Secret Garden, a new opera by The San Francisco Opera and Cal Performances. It features music by Nolan Gasser and Carey Harrison, visual designs by Naomie Kremer, lighting design by Christopher Maravich, and costumes by Kristi Johnson. Based off the classic novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
We all remember hearing the tale of Mary Lennox as a child – her unfortunate fate leaving her parentless – and a unique arrangement with a strange cousin that led to a brilliant discovery of the secret garden. In this production your sense of childhood wonder will be reignited! The visuals were an elaborate set of projections and videos onto the set that depicted lovely gardens, a tapestry of topiaries, and scenes from around the world. In the SF Opera blog Naomie Kremer talks about her inspiration and her travels influencing her work for the projections seen in The Secret Garden.
I really felt transported back in time — smart designs are paired with smart voices and it’s an experience your whole family can enjoy. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a kid at age 9 or a kid at age 88 you’ll love this production of The Secret Garden. For tickets and more information please click here: Secret Garden – Tickets.
