Goals for the new year

A new (or refurbished) 50mm lens

A new (or refurbished) canon body (so that I have three cameras instead of two)

A new yoga body (ha ha. fun little joke there)

To eat healthier always

To hydrate myself always (which I am succeeding on…so far)

To be aware of my posture (always) even when shooting

Promote myself promote myself promote myself (even more)

Work hard, enjoy it, work hard, enjoy it, then work some more

Expand my personal opera library (both in live performances but in recordings)

Try new things

Be more positive

Get married! (That one I’m REALLY looking forward to…if only California could catch up legally).

Continue growing new relationships professional and personal

Re-teach myself French, keep working on the Italian that already exists

Hello everyone!!

I hope this post finds everyone well into their new year and tackling their resolutions!

I’m in the midst of lots of work – just self-published my first coffee table book entitled BRIGHT. The only copy exists with my mother in Philadelphia (right now) but I’m hoping to put together smaller sized versions of several of the pieces in BRIGHT that I can put up for sale in a couple of weeks. Look for more on that in the near future!

While taking a break from editing this morning I found this fantastic – hilarious video on my facebook newsfeed. This hilarious parody video of real, beauty commercials really hits the nail on the head – “maybe she’s born with it? — nope, maybe it’s photoshop!” Just watch and enjoy. New Beauty Secret! Photoshop!

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to explain to a client of mine what can be deemed a “realistic edit” and an “exaggerated edit” . A realistic edit is something that will enhance what already exists, cleans up the present image, and makes the person look healthy, happy, and natural. An exaggerated edit is something like “move my chin up three inches”, “take away my arm in this photo”, and my all time favorite, “can you make me 50 lbs thinner?” – there’s a point when too much photoshop just makes you look freaky! For me the more natural, real, and happy a person looks the better – stay away from losing real aspects of yourself when you make editing requests. It won’t help you when you show up for an audition or performance and your headshot looks nothing like you in real life!!!!

That’s some hearty advice from me to you!

2011 Adler Fellows Gala Concert, Herbst Theater

It was a beautiful night for singing! The skies were fog-free in San Francisco this past Thursday night as the 2011 Adler Fellows prepared for the Gala Concert at Herbst Theater. Under the direction of Maestro Giuseppe Finzi the Adlers put on a brilliant showcase of their many talents. It was an absolute pleasure to photograph the rising stars as they bid farewell to a very busy year with the San Francisco Opera.

Two worlds: autodesk & occupy sf

…that kind of rhymes? autodesk — occupy sf…sort of?

Tonight was an amazing night. It remains at this moment somewhat indescribable.

I’ll explain in a minute…for now here are some of my photos of what’s going on right now at Occupy SF downtown at the Ferry Building/Embarcadero. Photos were taken around 10 pm on 10/26/11.

Only a few minutes after getting on the bus to head home there was a large crashing sound and then lots of sirens and police and fire vehicles drove past us back towards the Occupy SF core. Hopefully no one was hurt. On a softer note, here’s some of my images from tonight’s book launch! Talk about a hefty spoonful of social change for one evening! In so many ways!!!

Before I made my way down to the mass of tents, homemade signs, and port-a-potties I was busy at Autodesk Gallery for the Material Change book launch event with Eve Blossom. It was quite a contrast from one place to the next. A design space with brand new ideas leading the world into the future and on the very same block, less than 2 minutes and 2 floors down from that, occupy sf. (This is why it’s difficult for me to explain my evening…because it was such an experience… in both spaces!) I met a plethora of wonderful, brilliant minds, artists, and communicators tonight at the book launch. I loved every minute of it! I have to admit though one of the highlights was when the tech guy, Jeff turned on the 3D imaging toy that Autodesk Gallery has setup in the back gallery. I can’t even remember it’s official name…but it’s made up of twenty (20) Canon400D cameras pointed at one spot: the adjustable seat dead center. You sit down, the screen tells you to center the frames, and voila –all twenty cameras shoot and in time, the computer then processes all of the images into a 3D image of yourself. (I haven’t received mine yet – but I was told it will come in my email. I. am. excited. about that!) Here’s what it looks like:

Tonight I’ll be taking some photos at Autodesk Gallery for a book launch with Eve Blossom along with her featured guest Yves Behar. Eve and Yves will be presenting their knowledge of sustainable textiles, fabrics, and design with the release of Eve’s new book, Material Change. Yves Behar was featured in a 2008 TED talk about sustainable design and products. Here’s his video: Yves Behar, TED Talks.

I’m looking forward to tonight’s event!

Tomorrow, just confirmed that I’m shooting coverage for a Futures Without Violence event in the Presidio.

I haven’t worked with them before but they came to me through a dear friend at the Domestic Violence Consortium. I’m so happy to be a part of such a wonderful batch of events – last minute or not, it’ll be fascinating and eye opening! Pictures from the DVC 2011 Gala at the Rrazz Room are going to be posted soon!

Remembering Steve.

Photos taken on October 9th, 2011 outside the home of Steve Jobs. Four days after his death a plethora of apples, some bitten, some not, surround his home (along with security guards, donned in full black clothing & earpieces). Upon arrival it seems extremely fitting that at least three apple trees stand tall in his front yard. It was overwhelming the amount of things people had left on his sidewalk/fence/front lawn and space. I’m sure they have to remove the rotting apple cores at some point…it is very sweet though.

A group of male cyclists stopped and left their fancy wheels leaning against a tree to take a photo of one another (with their iPhone 4′s) with Steve Jobs’ house in the background. One man even smiled and gave a peace sign to the camera (phone). It seemed almost awkward – there was a mix of people mourning his loss and others celebrating his life. It was a whirring that could be felt in the air, even in the silence that came over the entire block as cars slowed, people came and went, and the security guards maintained their zones.

Amidst the apples – bitten and unbitten – were a few interesting reminders of his legacy. Time magazines with his portrait on the cover, home made posters and signs, gifts, and some apple merchandise – hoodies, hats, jackets, candles, and candy. It seemed like an anything goes type of memorial. If it meant something to you, and meant something to you in relation to Steve you put it somewhere on the fence with everything else. For me, the apples lining his fence were the most beautiful element. Rows and rows of apples. It was more than fitting. Take a look at some other photos from my visit that afternoon.

He certainly made an impact, rest in peace, Steve.

Something new

I’m not usually painting with watercolor & scanning my results up onto my computer but I did today. I was (and have been) feeling immensely inspired by Julia Child recently…well, for more than a year now. Many of you know about the parody video Toby and I made where I dressed as Julia and she as Paul. Anyway, Marion Cotillard fits into that same vein..minus the beurre et poulet (butter & chicken) because she is so classically French.

So here’s something beautiful and new from me to you, enjoy!

Perhaps I’ll do more painting ..we shall see!
